Mathew B. Brady is an American icon whose pioneering work in photography shaped the nation’s visual history.

Mathew B. Brady is principally responsible for the creation and collection of thousands of photographs of the antebellum period and the Civil War.  His Civil War photographs brought the stark realities of the human cost of war into public view for the first time.  Today, his work stands as a historical record of the Civil War, prominent Americans, including photographs of 18 of the 19 American presidents from John Quincy Adams to William McKinley, foreign dignitaries, ordinary people, and historical figures and places. 

Despite his professional renown, knowledge of the personal life Mathew B. Brady is sparse and conflicting.
